About Our Worship

Wheat Ridge Evangelical Lutheran Church is affiliated with Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LC-MS).

Our times of worship are opportunities for people to gather to receive God’s gift of forgiveness and to respond in praise and thanksgiving.

Through the order of service, we receive His gifts and we respond. The service includes Bible readings, a sermon based on Bible readings, hymns and a time of prayer. Lutheran Service Book’s order of service is used most frequently. Holy Communion is celebrated every Sunday with individual and Common Cup. The Lord’s Supper is one of the means through which our sins are forgiven and our faith is strengthened.

If you are a visitor, we hope you will be our guest and join us – to grow in your faith.

About the Holy Communion

At The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS), we deeply cherish the Lord’s Supper as a sacred gift from Christ—a precious means of grace where He gives us His true body and blood for the forgiveness of our sins, strengthening of our faith, and unity in Him.

Because receiving Holy Communion is a public profession of shared faith and unity in the Gospel as taught in Scripture and confessed in our Lutheran teachings, our Synod follows the historic practice known as close communion. This flows from a heartfelt desire to honor Christ’s words, care for each person’s spiritual well-being, and avoid any misunderstanding about our shared beliefs.

In line with guidance from our Commission on Theology and Church Relations (CTCR), we ordinarily invite to the Lord’s Table those who are baptized, confessing members in good standing of LCMS congregations or those church bodies with which we are in full altar and pulpit fellowship (meaning we share complete agreement in doctrine).

We recognize that there can be special circumstances where pastoral care is needed—such as emergencies or unique individual situations—and our pastors are entrusted to discern these cases with love and responsibility.

This practice isn’t about excluding anyone from God’s love or judging personal faith; rather, it’s an expression of deep care. We want to ensure that everyone who receives the Sacrament does so to their blessing, without risk of harm (as Scripture warns in 1 Corinthians 11), and in true unity of confession.

If you are not a member of an LCMS congregation or one in fellowship with us, we gently ask that you refrain from communing today. Please know you are fully welcome to participate in the rest of the service, hear God’s Word, and join us in prayer. We would be happy to speak with you afterward—our pastor would love to visit with you, answer questions, or explore how we might support you in your faith journey.

Regarding our own members, the same principle of confessional unity applies: it is not appropriate to commune at altars where full agreement in the Gospel and all its articles is not shared.

We offer this explanation with genuine affection, because we value you and want you to experience the fullness of Christ’s gifts in a way that is faithful and uplifting. May God bless your time with us today! If you’d like more information or resources about this teaching, just let us know—we’re here for you.
