During our time together, we’ll develop a strong theology of mission for what some might call the “unsettling” times in which we live nowadays as Christians. Many might go directly to Matthew 28, the Great Commission, for their theology of mission, but I don’t think that’s the best place to start. I would suggest that we need to start all the way back in the beginning – in Genesis – and work our way through the Old Testament and then on into the New Testament. Together we’ll explore what our missionary God has been up to as he reaches out to the nations to bring the lost back to himself – first through Israel, then through Jesus, the ultimate missionary, and then through the church, as Jesus works through her, that is through you and me, to continue carrying out God’s Mission. As we do this together, we’ll discover certain mission themes as they reveal themselves throughout the Bible and ask ourselves how those themes might be applied in our own context. My hope and prayer is that we leave with a renewed sense of courage, joy and hope as we participate in God’s Mission and lead God’s people into the mission field all around us.
